The general character of the lower Pennsylvanian column-bearing coral fauna is described, and a terminology of lophophyllid coral structures is given. Kansas Geological Survey, Geology Placed on ...Solitary rugosans (e.g., Caninia, Lophophyllidium, Neozaphrentis, Streptelasma) are often referred to as horn corals because of a unique horn-shaped chamber with a wrinkled, or rugose, wall. Some solitary rugosans reached nearly a meter in length. However, some species of rugose corals could form large colonies (e.g., Lithostrotion ).Index fossil. Index fossils (also known as guide fossils or zone fossils) are fossils used to define and identify geologic periods (or faunal stages). They work on the premise that, although different sediments may look different depending on the conditions under which they were laid down, they may include the remains of the same species of ...

Jun 18, 2007 · Lophophyllidium dunbari differs from Lophophyllidium proliferum (McChesney) (1860) in the proportionately smaller diameter of the column and in the less curved form of the corallite. Information as to the internal features of the genotype species, originally described by McChesney, is lacking. The rugosan coral species Lophophyllidium proliferum (McChesney, 1860) has long been associated with the Pennsylvanian (Missourian) strata of the Illinois Basin. The neotype established by Jeffords (1942) and associated specimens collected near Springfield, IL are nearly identical to the study samples fromThe genus Lophophyllidium has been dis-cussed at length by several workers (e.g. Jef-fords, 1942, p. 211-213). Serious taxonomic problems remain with respect to the type species of the genus, L. proliferum (McChes-ney), and with the Kendrick Shale species, seemingly L. profundum. The type specimens of L. proliferum are apparently lost (Jeffords,
