The rocks were deposited in the Permian Period about 250 million years ago when a large shallow bay covered much of the area. Even to Kansans, the beautiful Gypsum Hills can seem like another state entirely. All 40+ miles of beauty stretches between Medicine Lodge and Coldwater along US-160. Adventuring through the back roads, however, gives you different and amazing views of what is otherwise a straight shot between towns.The trails are hard-packed soil with very little loose dirt. There are lots of trees, some rocks, and steep hills. Most of the trails are single track with few hazards that cater to the amateur dirt bikers. They have 240 miles of off-road trails. 6.
